Men's Fencing Earns Win Against Harvard

The MIT fencing team faced NCAA rival Harvard University Saturday. The men's team defeated Harvard decisively, winning 21 bouts and dropping only six. The women's team took an early lead, but were edged out in the final bouts of the meet and lost 1517.

The men's team, led by the sabre squad, won against Harvard for the first time in almost a decade. Squad leader Brian Bower '99, Evangelos Efstathiou '99, and Caroline Purcell '02 each went undefeated and gave MIT a 90 lead to start the meet. Both the epee and foil squads finished with a 63 record. Epee victories came from Mike Krypel '01, Curtis Wade III '01, and Tom Baker '00. In foil, Andre Van Horn '01, Ben Vandiver '00, Ali Ibrahim '01, and Oliver Chadwick '02 were victorious. Alan Asbeck '02 and Neal Devaraj '02 also got the opportunity to compete.

The women's team was led by epee squad leader Nora Szasz '99. In addition, the epee squad had solid performances from Sylwia Daniszewska '00, Sara Perry '99, and Jessica Sandland '99. Women's foil was fenced by Dianne Allen '01, Danielle Morse '02, Joan Hon '01, and Oriana Hunter '99.

This weekend, the fencing team travels to Brandeis University to face long time rivals Brandeis and Boston College, as well as Vassar College, Brown University and St. John's University.
