Volleyball hosts and wins Invitational

The women's volleyball team cruised through the MIT Invitational volleyball tournament last weekend, winning in the final round against the University of Michigan, Dearborn. It was the first-ever athletic match between the two schools, as MIT won in four games, 16-14, 12-15, 15-12, 15-10.

The Invitational began last Friday evening, with MIT defeating Clark University (15-5, 15-9, 15-11) and Albany State University (15-12, 15-14, 15-9). Saturday morning the Engineers topped Wesleyan University, 15-10, 15-3, 15-4, in the semifinal match.

Juniors Cindy Parrish and Susie Gardner led MIT and were selected to the All-Tournament team.

Wednesday evening the Engineers dropped a tough match to Lowell Institute, 11-15, 9-15,

16-14, 15-5, 13-15. Lowell is the second-ranked Division II team in the Northeast.

in Rolex tournament[cp12]

Alexis Photiades '91 won the New England Division III Rolex tennis tournament, held last weekend at MIT. Photiades defeated the US Coast Academy's Justin Willis, 7-6, 6-1, Friday, and Tufts University's Brian Nurenberg, 7-5, 6-3, in the final match on Saturday. Photiades will compete in Corpus Christi, TX, October 19-21, in the Rolex National Small College Championships.

The men's soccer team began last week with a double-overtime, 2-2, tie against Brandeis University on Tuesday. Kevin Galli '91 (Stephan Feldgoise assist) scored first for MIT at 27:30, followed by a Marc Bailey '91 (from Marcello Torres '91) goal at 44:29.

On Saturday, the Engineers recorded a 3-1 win over Norwich, as Feldgoise (two goals) and Torres scored. Goalkeeper Chris Prince '92 made 10 saves.

Tuesday, however, MIT dropped a 5-1 match to Gordon College. Willie Scruggs '92 scored the Engineers' only goal, at 79:15.

[cp11]Women's soccer tops

Regis, 3-0[cp12]

The women's soccer team evened its record at 4-4-2 with a 3-0 win over Regis College yesterday at Steinbrenner Stadium. Annette Lee '92 scored twice and freshman Dionne Chapman headed in a corner kick for an insurance goal to lead MIT.

Brindha Muniappa '94 assisted on both of Lee's goals, the first at 8:28 in the first half, the second at 27:10. Both were shot off a centering pass. Chapman's score at 37:47 was assisted by Vanessa Filiberti '91 and Azza Idris '91.

Last Friday, the women's soccer team lost to Curry College, 1-0. . . . The field hockey team won its second game of the season, defeating Pine Manor College, 1-0, last Friday, but lost to Smith College, 3-0, on Saturday. . . . Women's tennis beat Babson College, 8-1, on Friday, but lost to Smith College, 6-3, on Tuesday. . . . The sailing team won last weekend's Smith Trophy. The Engineers scored 44 points, competing on the Charles River, with Tufts University second, with 64. . . . The golf team scored 348 points to place 17th in the Eastern College Athletic Association's qualifying tournament for Northern New England, held at the Hanover, NH, Country Club.
