Women's Tennis Beats Wheaton

By Nisha Singh
Team Captain

The women's tennis team traveled to Wheaton College on Tuesday for their first match of the fall season. It was also the team's first New England Women's Mid Atlantic Conference match. MIT won 54, but not before inclement weather forced the singles matches indoors.

At first doubles, Mealani Nakamura '00 and Kelly Koskelin '02 won 86 after trailing 41 at the outset. Jessica Hall '02 and Nisha Singh '00 won 85 at second doubles in a match that featured many lead changes. YiNing Chen '02 and Shikha Gupta '01 lost a tough match at third doubles by the score of 81. Priscilla Cheung '02 and Divya Bhat '02 won 86 at fourth doubles.

Singles play started outdoors but was halted at the beginning of everyone's first set due to a downpour. At first singles, Nakamura won 63, 61, while her doubles partner Koskelin, prevailed by almost the same score at second singles, 64, 61. The most exciting match of the day was won by Hall at third singles 26, 76(73), 64. Not only did Hall save three match points in the second set, but the match turned out to be the deciding one in the overall score. Singh played well in the first set of her fourth singles match, but lost 75, 60. Cheng lost 60, 64 at fifth singles, and Gupta lost 64, 63 at sixth singles. Cheung lost 82 at seventh singles.

The team plays a doubleheader at home on Saturday, with the first match against Skidmore College and the second against Springfield College.
