Table Tennis Team Gets Division Title, Seeks League Win

By Henry Tang
Team Captain

The MIT table tennis team secured the League of Northeast Intercollegiate Table Tennis division championship last Saturday after defeating Harvard 31 in the semifinal and Dartmouth 40 in the final.

After an impressive undefeated regular season (60), MITseemed a shoe-in for the division title. In the semifinal, however, Harvard put up the strongest competition seen this season. Although MIT still won convincingly, it was not without a hard fight. Henry Tang '98 defeated Lewis Shi, 1921, 2118, 2110, Eugene Shuster G beat Aaron Chung, 2117, 2110, Peter Huang '00 lost to Lifan Yang, 218, 1921, 19-21, and Michael Chechelnitski G '98 won against Thomas Lee, 2110, 1421, 2117 to give MIT a 31 win over their rival.

The final turned out to be a much easier victory as MIT plowed through Dartmouth in straight games. Tang defeated Yin Xu, 2117, 2116, Shuster won against Jason Deeken, 2110, 2111 Huang beat Tom Doan, 2110, 2112 and Chechelnitski Lukas Cadil, 2118, 2112 as MIT swept their opponents with a 40 win.

The top two teams in the north division will face the top two teams from the south division for the league championship. While the team members expect to face stiffer competitions from Johns Hopkins University and Rensselaer Poly- technic Institute, they are optimistic about their chances at winning the championship.

Congratulations should also be be extended to Shuster and Huang for finishing in first and second place, respectively, in the ACUI New England Regional, which qualifies them for the nationals.
