New artwork will be inspired by MIT lore
New Landmarks: MIT Hacks, Myths and Lore
First meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 3 p.m., Student Center.
Cambridge artist Mags Harries has been commissioned to create new campus artwork based on MIT mythology. She is currently looking for stories - either real or imagined - that tell about MIT's history, students, subcultures, and legends. A class will meet several times over Independent Activities Period to generate ideas and help decide the location and content of the new artwork.
A previous plan by Harries to create a work of art to be installed in the atrium of the Student Center ended in 1990 when she proposed a shaman's hat made of community members' hair. The proposed project inspired controversy among students, many of whom were repelled and disturbed by the idea of a piece of artwork made of hair.
