The ballroom dance team started the competition season on the right foot (except for the foxtrot, which always starts on the left) by dominating the Harvard Beginners' Competition last Friday night, held at Harvard University's Lowell Hall.

The competition consisted of individual competitions in American style foxtrot and swing and international style rhumba as well as a team match composed of those three dances and waltz (all American style).

MIT team members swung through four rounds of individuals and consistently brought three couples to finals. Placing in the foxtrot were Attila Mekis G with his partner Mary Chen '97 (third), Yezdezard Z. Lashkari G with Rachel J. Dowell '96 (sixth), and Gbor Csnyi Gwith Marta Lipinski G (seventh).

In swing, Andreas Gast G and Dowell placed third, Mekis and Violeta M. Ivanova Gtook fifth, and Vikas Bhushan Gand Judy Yueng placed sixth.

In a tour de force rhumba, Bhushan and Yueng grabbed first, Alexander N.Y. Wang '96 and Linda Kim took second, and Mekis and Ivanova placed fifth.

MIT showed great strength during team matches by beating all-time rivals Harvard and placing its A team at first place in a tie with Northeastern and its B team at fourth.

The ballroom dance team is one of the Department of Athletics' newest club sports and is coached by Chris Johnston, Kari Hyytinen, and Al O'Hara at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Boston.
