Varsity sailors battled to a third place finish in a hotly contested 14-school Northern Series regatta last Saturday.

After 16 races in blustery southwest breezes, Vjekoslav Svilan '95 with Patricia Schmidt '96, and David Hellmuth '98 with Christina Chu '98 finished close behind Boston College and Tufts University.

Familiar Charles River racing in MIT's own Lark and Tech dinghies helped the home team beat its New England rivals from Harvard University, Maine Maritime Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Boston University, Brandeis University, Salem State College, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Northeastern University, University of Vermont, Williams College and Wellesley College.

Second place finish in warmup regatta

MIT's hot sloop sailors tied for second in a warmup regatta for the New England Championship.

Drew Mutch '98, Jonas Sylvester '96, and Frank Marcoline '95 displayed awesome teamwork over the quadrilateral courses as they crushed competitors from BC, Harvard, Tufts, and BU.

Massachusetts Maritime won this breezy contest of six races with spinnakers in MIT's Rhodes 19 sloops.

The Engineers will be looking to win all the marbles next weekend at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., when they take on the best 15 area colleges, battling for the two New England entries in the Collegiate Sloop Championships.
