O'Neill Laid to Rest

More than 1,700 attended the Monday morning funeral mass of Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill at St. John's Church in North Cambridge. O'Neill died on Wednesday at the age of 81, after serving as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 to 1987.

Vice President Al Gore, former Presidents Gerald R. Ford and Jimmy Carter, current Speaker Thomas S. Foley, FoleyUs predecessor Jim Wright, and over 100 current and past Congressmen attended the funeral.

Many also stood outside in the 15 degree cold, listening to the private mass over loudspeakers erected outside the church. O'Neill was buried later in a cemetery on Cape Cod.
