Let peace center continue effort

I am saddened by recent indications that the "Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Center" will be forced out of its present site. As a veteran I was encouraged to learn that some students care enough about human suffering to launch a public witness against war.

Now it seems quite clear that relocating the peace center is merely preliminary to abolishing it.

If the visibility of pacifism is to be diminished on campus, then, under the rubric of balance, let us also reduce militarism at MIT. Every junior-edition Oliver North in a Reserve Officers' Training Corps uniform represents an expenditure of tens of thousands of public dollars, money that should have gone to the hungry and the homeless right here in Cambridge.

If the peace center is to be moved, then let us also move ROTC -- out the door and off campus.
