Rifle team begins season with defeat to West Point

By Ian Blasch

The MIT Varsity Rifle Team has started the 1991-92 season with a barrage of formidable performances. The team entered competition against nationally ranked United States Military Academy at West Point this past weekend with a 5-0 record in air and a 4-3 record in smallbore.

MIT performed to standards, but West Point proved to be a difficult adversary, and the Beavers fell to the guns of the Cadets. MIT lost 1461-1496 in air and 2144-2276 in smallbore. The margin of loss in air was small and the rifle team will have a chance to compete against West Point again in February.

MIT has already claimed victories against St. John's College, Virginia Military Institute, Pennsylvania State University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, Edinboro University and Wentworth Institute of Technology.

The MIT Rifle Team has become a strong competitor this past year because of the coaching of Dick Dyer. Strong performances have been put in this year by shooters Miguel Perales '93, Ian Blasch '93, Ting-Hsuan Wu '93, Dorian Balch '94 and Arthur Merritt '95.

The rifle team will undoubtedly have one of its finest seasons in years if it continues shooting at the level set at the start of the season. Next weekend the rifle team travels to Norwich.
