Some Wellesley UROP funds

I am writing to clarify and expand on a few points made in the article ["Exchanges broaden MIT education," Sept. 23] in The Tech.

The article states that I said "Wellesley students are not allowed to be on UROP payroll." Because that statement implies that Wellesley students cannot receive funding for their UROP projects, I would like it noted that although UROP's own finances are restricted to MIT students, Wellesley students may receive funding from their MIT/UROP faculty supervisors. They may then apply to UROP for waiver of overhead on that fund[el-17p6]ing.

Also, Wellesley students may apply for funding from the Sea Grant UROP Award and summer stipend support is available from Wellesley College for both Wellesley and MIT UROPers (as noted in the Awards section of the 1985-86 UROP Directory).

I really don't know how "many students decide to transfer to MIT after getting a taste of scientific research at MIT." I do know a couple of students whose decision to transfer to MIT may have been affected by their positive experiences in UROP.
