Coddling for women not needed here

To the Editor:

While clearly MIT has a responsibility to meet the needs of all its students, why is a special "staff associate for women students' interests" needed in the Dean's Office ["Women's post will be filled," Jan. 30]?

Perhaps it is also necessary to have a staff associate for men students' interests, a Cheney Room for men only, a newsletter for men at MIT, a bulletin board reserved for news about men, a men's independent living group, a men's studies program and research room, an MIT men's history week, and so on.

But I would prefer to think that neither women nor men at MIT need extra coddling or special privileges. Let's encourage the MIT administration to end its sexist policies and practices.
