While watching fireworks on Wednesday night, the revelry was kept in check by a band of frontal precipitation that passed during the festivities. Now, though, as we head away from the 4th and toward the weekend, the future is bright.

Our recent bit of un-springlike weather seems partially responsible for a creeping malaise spreading through the normally cheerful New England population. I noticed that I was getting progressively grumpier, but I hadn't realized how bad it was until I read a Metro reader's letter to the editor calling for serious harm to befall Puxatawney Phil: the adorable ball of fur that symbolically determines our climatic fate.

After a spot of Arctic air that was drier than a Churchill martini and colder than Dick Cheney's heart, there have been several beautiful days with temperatures in the 60s — we even opened the windows during dinner in my apartment. Given this time of year in New England, it should come as no surprise, though, that things are about to change. The first day of spring is only about a week away, but we will experience some weather whiplash as we're yanked back into winter.

In the midst of several cold spells that have brought temperatures around 10°F cooler than climatology, as well as the first major snowstorm of the year, we are looking at some incoming precipitation that presents a bit of a challenge.
