In a hard-fought battle, the MIT Women’s Basketball team emerged with a 65-49 victory over Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in the consolation game of the Emerson College Tip Off Tournament on Sunday. Junior Lauren S. Burton ’13 led all scorers with 16 points and tacked on seven rebounds and three assists en route to All-Tournament Team honors for the Engineers.

Emily Kuo ’13 scored in the 23rd minute, and Meghan S. Wright ’13 made some key second-half saves as the MIT Women’s Soccer team scored a 1-0 victory over Wellesley College in a NEWMAC tournament quarterfinal at Roberts Field in Steinbrenner Stadium on Tuesday. With the win, MIT, the No. 3 seed, advances to a semifinal matchup with No. 2 seed Wheaton College on Saturday.

Allison M. Park ’12 notched a goal and an assist in MIT’s 2-0 victory over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in a NEWMAC women’s soccer game on Saturday afternoon. The win lifted the Engineers’ ledger to 10-3-2 for the year, marking their third straight 10-win campaign and fifth during the last six years. In addition, MIT raised its conference record to 5-1-2, which resulted in fourth-year head coach Martin Desmarias becoming the program’s all-time leader in league victories.

The nationally-ranked No. 11 MIT coed sailing team captured eighth place out of 20 squads at the Danmark Trophy while its entries finished in fourth and fifth place at the Charles River Invitational this past weekend. In addition, team member Hanna M. Vincent ’13 secured 10th place at the New England Women’s Singlehanded Championship.

The MIT sailing team kicked off its season by competing in three events this past weekend. The Engineers captured fifth place out of 20 teams at the Harry Anderson Trophy, finished ninth at the Toni Deutsch Trophy, and took third and fourth at the Harvard Invitational.

Holding a one-goal advantage midway through the second half, MIT’s Stephanie C. Leger ’11 won the first of four straight draw controls, helping spark a 5-1 run that secured an 18-13 victory over Wellesley College in a NEWMAC women’s lacrosse game on Tuesday afternoon. Leger finished with a game-high 11 draw controls, just one shy of tying the Institute record, and also posed two of her three goals during the late spurt.

Laura M. Wacker ’13, Erica W. Little ’11, and Kathleen M. Kauffman ’12 each registered five points as the MIT Women’s Lacrosse team posted a 16-3 victory over Gordon College on Tuesday night in their first game of the 2011 campaign.

In their first NEWMAC matchup of the year, the women’s basketball team beat the U.S. Coast Guard Academy 59-24 on Tuesday night. The Engineers registered their first conference-opening win since the 2002-03 season and also surrendered the fewest points to a league opponent in program history. In addition, the Cardinal and Gray’s ledger of 4-2 equals its best start since the 2000-01 campaign.

Freshman Tamara R. Pena’s 10 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and three steals helped power the MIT women’s basketball team to a 64-32 victory over non-conference foe Fisher College on Saturday afternoon. Winners of three straight games, the Engineers (3-2) surrendered the program’s fewest points in a game since the 2000-2001 season and saw their percentage of bench scoring during the streak move to 43 percent.

In the regular-season finale of women’s volleyball on Saturday, MIT fell to NEWMAC rival the U.S. Coast Guard Academy before sweeping Johnson & Wales University in a non-conference tilt.
