In the first meeting between two programs, MIT emerged with a 55-43 victory over Johnson & Wales University in a non-conference women’s basketball game on Wednesday night. Alexxis R. Isaac ’15 paced the Engineers (6-4) with 18 points, to go along with six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.

Behind the strength of efficient hitting and solid defense, the MIT women’s volleyball team defeated host and top seed Wellesley College, 25-17, 26-24, 25-15, in the 2012 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on Sunday afternoon. The No. 3 Engineers (30-5) collected their first title since 1990 and fourth overall to earn a spot in the upcoming NCAA Championship Tournament. Kristine A. Bunker ’14 was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after compiling 28 kills, a .313 hitting percentage, and 15 blocks.

Sophomore Caitlin A. Mackey scored two first-half goals and tacked on an assist while tournament Most Outstanding Player junior Madeline L. Wharton added a goal helping second-seeded MIT claim the 2012 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Championship with a 6-3 win over fourth-seeded Springfield College on Sunday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

A solid defensive performance coupled with a second-half goal was all MIT needed in its 1-0 victory over the Springfield College Pride in a NEWMAC field hockey game on Saturday morning. Kimberly A. Barker ’13 provided the lone marker that was set up by Elizabeth A. Dethy ’15. Sophomore goalie Jenna R. Klein stopped the only shot on goal she faced in her second career shutout as the Engineers improved to 12-2 on the year and 5-1 in conference play.

In a back-and-forth affair, MIT Men’s Lacrosse came out on top with a 9-8 double overtime victory over UMass Boston on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman James C. Slonaker netted the game-winner 57 seconds into the second extra session to complete the hat-trick for the Engineers.

Behind the strength of a six-run second inning and a four-run burst in the eighth, the MIT Baseball team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 13-4, on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Engineers improved to 4-2 on the year while the Leopards’ ledger lowered to 7-6.

On Tuesday night, host Gordon College beat the MIT Women’s Lacrosse team 16-13 in both teams’ first game of the season. Senior Katie M. Kauffman led the Engineers with five points on three goals and two assists while picking up three ground balls.

With a record of 62-24, the MIT Men’s Fencing team finished third out of 11 teams at the New England Championship hosted by Vassar College on Saturday. Sophomore Ehsan Izadmehr registered the best individual outing for the Engineers as he placed fifth overall in the sabre competition. He compiled a 7-3 ledger in the A pool and went 4-1 in semifinal action before posting a 2-3 mark in the final round.

Nine unanswered points during a span of seven minutes helped propel MIT to a 43-36 victory over Mount Holyoke College in a NEWMAC women’s basketball game on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Alexxis R. Isaac tallied 10 points, five rebounds, four steals, and two assists as the Engineers improved to 6-3 on the year and 3-1 in conference play.

Despite early foul trouble that put Caltech in the bonus after 4:19 elapsed, the MIT Women’s Basketball team defeated the Beavers, 100-26, on Friday night. The Engineers reached the century mark for the second time in program history and also registered the second largest margin of victory as the Tech set these marks in a 105-30 decision over Rivier College in 1998.
