MIT fell to Suffolk University, 61-42, in the championship game of the MIT Women’s Basketball Tip Off Tournament on Saturday after opening its season with an overtime win against Framingham State College. The Engineers outlasted Framingham State, 71-59, in the first game of the Tip Off Tournament on Friday, to advance to the championships.

The MIT women’s volleyball team earned an at-large bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III tournament, despite losing in the finals of the conference tournament Saturday. Tech, the host for this weekend’s NCAA New England Regionals, plays its first regional match on Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. in Rockwell Cage.

In a battle of undefeated women’s volleyball teams in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference, MIT emerged with a 30-28, 30-25, 30-23 win over Wellesley College on Tuesday night. The victory lifted the Engineers’ ledger to 26-1 overall and 7-0 in conference play and also extended their winning streak to 22 consecutive matches.

The Wellesley College field hockey team earned a 1-0 win over MIT in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference game on Tuesday afternoon, extending its winning streak to three. Emily Hewitt earned her seventh shutout of the season and the third in as many games for the Blue, which improved to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play. With the loss, the Engineers’ ledger lowered to 4-9 on the year and 1-4 in NEWMAC competition.

MIT recorded a 30-28, 30-25, 30-14 win over host U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday night, recording its sixth consecutive sweep over a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference foe. The Engineers (21-1, 6-0 NEWMAC) dealt the Bears their first regular-season home conference loss in nearly four years, with their last defeat coming at the hands of MIT on Oct. 21, 2003.

The MIT women’s volleyball team was crowned champion of the 2007 Tufts University Invitational this past Saturday. Both the Engineers and Wellesley College finished the two-day tournament with 4-0 records, but MIT was awarded the title because its 12-1 record in games played was stronger than Tufts’ 12-5 ledger. Katherine C. Rowe ’10 was named the Tournament MVP, while Amanda J. Morris ’08 was selected to the All-Tournament Team.

The MIT women’s volleyball team extended its winning streak to six after defeating New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference foe Worcester Polytechnic Institute 30-7, 30-7, 30-13 and University of Massachusetts Dartmouth 30-20, 30-15, 30-19 in a pair of matches on Tuesday night. In the conference nightcap, Rose Zhong ’08 tallied an Institute-record 13 aces, recording 10 in the opening game, and added a team-high 12 digs.

The field hockey team picked up its first home win of the season following a 2-1 overtime victory against Lasell College on Tuesday night. Ashley N. Mobbs ’11 converted a feed from Jessica M. Oleinik ’11 with 5:52 remaining in overtime to give the Engineers (2-2) their second win in a row. With the loss, the Lasers’ ledger dropped to 0-3 on the year.

The women’s volleyball team continued its successful season this past weekend with a second-place finish at the Hiram College Invitational in Hiram, Ohio. MIT opened the weekend by blanking Geneva College 30-22, 30-20, 30-21, but then fell to the host Terriers 30-19, 30-23, 31-29. The Engineers bounced back by outlasting Saint Mary’s College (Ind.) 29-31, 30-23, 30-25, 21-30, 15-13 and sweeping Thiel College 30-24, 30-22, 30-28. Senior defensive specialist Carrie C. Buchanan ’08 represented MIT (6-1) on the All-Tournament Team.
