Praveen Pamidimukkala ’08, Doria M. Holbrook ’08, and Julia C. Zimmerman ’09 earned College Sports Information Directors Association/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America accolades in the competitive at-large division to give the Engineers eight national plaudits for the 2007–08 academic year. Pamidimukkala received the first honor in the history of the men’s volleyball program, while Holbrook collected her third straight award as a member of the women’s swimming and diving team. Zimmerman was also a repeat selection for the women’s gymnastics team.

The men’s tennis team won in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Tournament with a 5-0 win over Salem State College at Middlebury College on Friday afternoon. The victory is their first win in the tournament since 2001.

For the second year in a row, MIT sent two representatives to the NCAA National Collegiate Men’s Gymnastics Championships hosted this past weekend by Stanford University. Boris Rasin ’09 made his second trip to the national qualifying round while Joshua S. Coblenz ’08 received his first nod.

Corey Garvey ’10 scored with 1:44 left in overtime to give the MIT men’s lacrosse team an 8-7 win over host University of Massachusetts Boston on Tuesday. With the win, the Engineers improved to 2-6 on the season while the Beacons fell to 1-6 overall.

The men’s gymnastics team finished in sixth place with a score of 310.300 at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship hosted by the U.S. Military Academy this past weekend. In the individual competition, Boris Rasin ’09 placed eighth in the pommel horse (13.300) as Joshua S. Coblenz ’08 captured ninth in the parallel bars (13.150). In addition, Rasin was voted the Most Improved Gymnast by the league’s coaches.

The MIT men’s gymnastics team kicked off its postseason push with a fifth-place finish at the USA Gymnastics National Championship held this past weekend at Springfield College. Joshua S. Coblenz ’08, the Engineers’ lone representative in the individual competition, claimed seventh in the still rings with a score of 13.400.

The MIT pistol team closed its season with a fourth-place finish at the National Rifle Association Intercollegiate Championship held the week of March 9. The team collected seven All-American awards, led by Edward S. Huo ’08, who ranked fifth overall and earned All-America First-Team honors in free pistol, standard pistol, and air pistol. Fuzhou Hu ’09 received air pistol Second-Team and free pistol Honorable Mention honors. Daniel Jang ’10 and Christine T. Hsueh ’10 earned Second-Team awards in free and air pistol, respectively.

Victories over Baruch College and nationally-ranked No. 11 Rivier College helped the No. 13 MIT men’s volleyball team surpass the 20-win mark for the fourth year in a row as its record improved to 21-10. The Engineers held off Baruch (32-30, 30-25, 30-27) and then outlasted Rivier (23-30, 27-30, 31-29, 30-13, 15-13) to reach the milestone. Earlier, Rivier topped Baruch, 36-34, 30-24, 28-30, 30-19.

A baseline jumper by Clara J. Yuan ’09 with 7.2 seconds on the clock helped lift MIT to a 47-45 victory over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference women’s basketball game on Saturday. With the win, the Engineers improved to 9-9 on the year and 2-5 in conference play, while the Bears (14-3), previously on a school-record seven game winning streak, suffered its first NEWMAC loss of the season.

The women’s ice hockey team fell to New England College and the University of Southern Maine in its final two games of the semester, held on Friday and Saturday. MIT will return to the ice after the holiday break.
