As MIT welcomes hundreds of high school seniors and their families to campus for Campus Preview Weekend, the “weather machine” is mostly being cooperative in honor of the event. Conditions will be especially nice for Saturday and Sunday of this weekend as a high pressure settles in. We will see mostly sunny conditions for the weekend and temperatures in the low 60s.

Over the next two days, we will see a slow return to slightly warmer conditions. Following Thursday’s storm, Boston had a fresh dusting of snow and temperatures were 10-20 degrees below normal. Yesterday night, this low pressure system moved off the Canadian coast. Slightly warmer air has moved over us in its place: today’s highs will be in the 30s, and highs on Saturday will be in the 40s and 50s.

Due to a strong high-pressure system settling in over the Northeast, the cold temperatures we experienced this past week will persist for at least a few more days. This high-pressure system brings a mass of cold Arctic air, and as a result, the high today will be only in the low 20°Fs. With winds of 15 mph during the day, the wind chill today may be as low as -5°F! Like today, Saturday will be sunny, but it will be slightly warmer.

Winter storm leaves Boston with several inches of snow.
December 3, 2013
The first week of December will be reasonably warm, with a mix of sun and clouds and highs in the mid-40s°F. A low-pressure system is situated over the Atlantic Ocean, but most of the precipitation is expected to stay away from the New England coast. The precipitation, if any, will be in the form of rain instead of snow. Temperatures will be on par with historical averages for Boston at this time of year.

Grab an umbrella instead of a sweater today: today’s temperatures will be among the warmest we’ve experienced in recent days, but we will also see rain for most of the day. The source of the rain is a powerful cold front which has been moving across the Midwest this week, producing strong winds and up to several inches of rain. Here in Boston, we will likely see about a quarter of an inch of rain. Winds may gust as high as 30 miles per hour. The cold front will then move off the coast tonight into tomorrow morning.

We will see cool but pleasant conditions in Boston as we head into the long weekend, with highs generally in the low 60s°F and lows in the low 50s°F. Overnight lows in the next two days may even dip into the upper 40s°F. Today and tomorrow, we will see some clouds and wind due to a coastal low-pressure system affecting the region from Virginia through New York and southern New England. This nor’easter will linger over the mid-Atlantic for several days.

The high pressure system that has brought good weather to our area for the past few days will continue to linger over the East Coast until at least the beginning of the weekend. Today and tomorrow will see clear skies, calm winds, and warm temperatures in the 70s°F, with nighttime lows in the upper 50s°F.
