CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — In the first match of the new year, the MIT coed squash team fell to Connecticut College, 8-1. The Engineers are now 3–10 for the season.

The women’s track and field team recorded its best finish ever at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Championships this weekend, finishing second overall out of 51 scoring teams. Moravian College topped the standings with 56 points, followed by MIT with 42.5, and Bates College came in third with 42.

The men’s swimming and diving team placed second at this year’s New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships this weekend, held at MIT’s Zesiger Pool. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy pulled away from the pack to win their third consecutive title, finishing the meet with a staggering 991 points, outdistancing runner-up MIT (868) and third-place finisher Springfield College (741).

The men’s fencing team finished ninth out of eleven teams this weekend in the Intercollegiate Fencing Association Championship, the oldest collegiate championship in the country. The épée team led the charge with an eighth-place finish, followed by foil (ninth) and sabre (10th). The women’s team finished tenth out of twelve teams, and the foil team posted the highest ranking for MIT as it took sixth place for the second year in a row.

The men’s and women’s fencing teams won the New England Championship last weekend, the seventh time ever that both teams have won the title during the same year. The men’s squad earned its 24th title while the women tallied their 14th crown.

The women’s ice hockey team registered its first win of the season last Friday with a 3-1 victory over Plymouth State University and then notched a 2-2 overtime tie with Castleton State College on Saturday. Defensewoman Stephanie V. Brenman ’09 and forward Lauren A. Kazmierski ’11 each tallied three points during the road trip as the team improved its record to 1-15-2 overall and 1-14-2 within the Eastern College Athletic Conference East division. Plymouth State fell to 0-17-1 (0-15-1) and Castleton State moved to 5-13-4 (4-9-4).
