Rates and Specifications

Paper size

Each page of The Tech is divided into 5 columns (each two inches wide) by 16 inches tall.

Advertisement size

Any size advertisement can be created using the following rules:

  • Widths are in even number of inches (full columns, where 1 column is 2 inches wide)
  • Heights are in full integers
# of columns wide x # of inches tall = # of column-inches
# of column-inches x advertisement rate = cost of ad

Deadlines

All copy must be received by 4:30 P.M. (EST/EDT) three business days before the issue run date. All advertisements must be accompanied by an email including size, run date(s), billing information, and contact information.

Submission Specifications

Digital advertisements are the preferred form of submission. Our email address for submission of advertisements is ads@tech.mit.edu. The favored forms of submission are PDF (Acrobat) files. However, The Tech also accepts files in TIFF, EPS, and PNG formats.

If you submit a PDF or EPS file, please make sure to embed all necessary fonts or send them under separate cover. If you are submitting a file in any other format, all font suitcase files must be included. The Tech cannot ensure that the printed advertisement will look as you intend it unless you include the fonts you use.

All images should be saved as TIFF or EPS files. The linescreen of raster images (such as photographs) should be 120 lpi, and the resolution should be more than 200 dpi.

All images not intended for printing in color must be saved in grayscale (not RGB or CMYK). All color advertisements are printed using the four process CMYK colors. Artwork for spot color advertisements must be colored using the proper separations corresponding to the desired spot colors.

Advertisements that do not meet these specifications are subject to cancellation or modification. Please contact the advertising office if there are any questions concerning a particular advertisement.

Details on rates and fees

Local open rate, $10.50/column-inch The local rate applies to all local (Cambridge and Boston area) advertisers other than Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

National open rate, $15.00/column-inch The national rate applies to all national (non-local) advertisers. These are net rates and are non-commissionable. Recognized agencies may apply commission to gross rates.

Non-profit open rate, $9.50/column-inch The non-profit rate applies to all federally recognized non-profit organizations with the proper federal ID number.

Recruiter open rate, $18.00/column-inch The recruiter rate applies to all advertisements dealing with recruitment, info sessions, and interviews.

MIT Institute rates The Institute rates are available only to Massachusetts Institute of Technology departments, clubs, organizations and individuals.

Insert rate, $500/1000 inserts The insert rate is per 1,000 inserts, per 8.5''x11'' sheet. An additional $50 is applied per extra sheet. The same insert rate applies to all types of advertisers. The Tech's circulation is 8,000 per issue.

Color Advertisements Color is available for all advertisements. The advertiser may submit a file with the appropriate colors embedded either for full or spot color processing. See sidebar for the cost associated with adding color to your purchase.

Special placement Special placement requests are available for a 20% surcharge on a first-come, first-served basis on all pages except the front page, page 2, and the editorial pages (4-5).

Late fee Advertisements submitted or altered after the deadline are subject to a 30% late fee

Typesetting fee The Tech can design your advertisement in its state-of-the-art production shop. For advertisements that are largely text-based, a 20% surcharge in addition to the regular cost of the advertisement will be added to the cost of the first insertion. For advertisements involving more extensive design and composition, additional fees will be charged. Any advertisement that is not submitted in an accepted digital file will also be charged a typesetting fee.

Classified ads The Tech does not contain a section specifically for classified ads. The smallest display ad size is 2'' wide by 1'' tall, or one column-inch. The appropriate open rate is applied.

Large Purchase Discounts In order to encourage the success of your advertising, The Tech now offers a discount on all purchases above 120 column-inches. Purchases of over 120, 240, and 360 column-inches are subject to a 10%, 20% and 30% reduction in rate respectively. The purchase must be made as a whole and, in the case of agencies, must represent one company advertising.
