MIT has achieved a 4th place ranking among all national universities in the US News and World Report rankings, tying with Caltech and Stanford University. Princeton University held onto the top spot for the seventh year in a row while Harvard, which tied for first with Princeton for the last three years, slipped to second place. Yale University maintained its third place ranking. MIT 's ranking gradually slipped from 4th place in 2004 to 7th place in 2006. In spite of this fact, US News awarded MIT the top ranking among US graduate schools with engineering programs in its 2006 rankings.
