Bulletin: Male Sophomore Falls to Death

A 19-year-old male sophomore was declared dead on arrival at the MIT Medical Center after falling from the fifteenth floor of the Green Building Friday evening at around 7:30 p.m..

The fall is being treated as an apparent suicide. The medical examiner will likely make a final ruling on the cause of death Monday.

The following statement was released by the MIT News Office Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.:

Student falls to his death

Senior Associate Dean Robert Randolph issued the following statement today to the MIT community:

"We regret to report the death of second-year student Philip Gale Friday night. Mr. Gale fell to his death from a 15th-floor window in Building 54 at about 7:30pm. Police said it was an apparent suicide.

"We urge students and other members of the MIT community who need counseling to call the Medical Department (3-4481) and ask for the psychiatrist on call, or the Counseling Support Service (3-4861).

"Mr. Gale, who was 19 years old and came from Charlotte, N..C., was dead on arrival at Massachusetts General Hospital."
