One member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity was injured this morning when what appears to have been a smoke bomb detonated accidentally. The student carrying the device was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. The Boston Herald reports that the student is in fair condition.
The incident occured when what appears to have been a prank went awry. The injured student and several other members of the fraternity were dressed in Halloween costumes and were walking towards Huntington Hall (10-250) with the intent of disrupting the Circuits and Electronics (6.002) course being held there. They were reportedly advertising Skuffle, a bi-annual charity drive and party being held by PKS this Saturday.
According to unconfirmed reports, police are currently searching the fraternity house, which is located at 530 Beacon Street.
"One of them was holding a device that they thought would go up in a puff of smoke," said Robert J. Sales, the associate director of the News Office. Instead, the device exploded, injuring the student.
Automatic fire doors sealed Building 10 off from the rest of the campus immedately after the bomb went off. The area remained sealed at 3:00 p.m., disrupting some afternoon classes sheceduled to take place there.
It is unclear right now what action, if any, MIT will take in response to the incident. "If something develops that indicates that there is a need for sanctions [then we'll pursue that]," Sales said. Advisor to Fraternaties, Sororities, and Independent Living Groups Neil H. Dorow declined to comment until he received more information about the student and the incident. Chief of the Campus Police Anne P. Glavin could not be reached for comment.
Earlier reports that three students had been killed or injured appear to have been unfounded.
