A short, high speed chase ended early Friday afternoon in a crash at Main Street and Vassar Street. A police officer and the suspect were injured during the chase.
The incident began earlier Friday morning with the theft of three BMWs stolen from East Cambridge said Sgt. Patrick Nagle of the Cambridge Police Department. At approximately 1:50 p.m. a police officer spotted one of the cars, a black BMW 325, while it was driving along Binney Street and gave chase.
A police lieutentant pulled out from 4th Street on to Binney, apprently to pursue the stolen car. The BWM hit it, spinning the police car 180 degrees and seriously injuring the driver. The condition of that officer was not known. In response to a question about whether the officer would die, Nagle said "We hope not, it's tough to say". Later reports indicated that the officer would recover.
After the collision The BMW continued on, crossinng Broadway Street. By that time the collision and the injury had been reported over the police radio and an officer supervising the Kendal Square construction at Main and Vassar stepped in to the street to stop the car. The BMW "tried to run the officer over" said Nagle. He felt that "his life and his safety" were in danger and realized that "the car was not slowing down".
The officer discharged "more than one shot" into the oncoming BMW. Apparently none of the bullets hit the driver, but they did cause the BMW to swerve in to the median strip on Vassar Street. The driver was seriously injured and the car was totalled. The driver did manage to make it out of the car before collapsing on the street. Cambridge police called an ambulance, which left the scene with the driver at 2:10.
There were reports that there were drugs involved in the incident. One reporter there said that one of the officers on the scene was a federal drug enforcement agent. Another witness reported that a bag of money was removed from the BMW. There was no official confirmation of those assertions.
Cambridge police are currently canvassing the area for additional subjects and evidence. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Cambridge Police at 389-3370.
There are also reports that the Whitehead institute is being evacuated due to a chemical leak. Additional information regarding that event will be forthcoming.
